In recent months, the mainstream and alternative media have devoted a significant amount of attention on voter suppression and new voter identification laws that have been proposed in states across the country. Proponents argue that these new laws are necessary to prevent voter fraud while critics maintain that voter fraud is relatively rare and that the new laws will result in the suppression of voter turnout and disenfranchise eligible citizens who, for whatever reason, to not possess the appropriate documentation. Yet, on the issue of voter suppression, new identification requirements pale in comparison with the routine disenfranchisement of political Independents. Read the rest of this entry →
Pass through security into the headquarters of Obama 2012, and the effect is like stepping into the world’s most high-tech dorm room. Spanning the entire floor of a Chicago skyscraper, the campaign’s nerve center boasts a ping-pong table, a staff of 300 and a life-size cardboard cutout of the president dressed in a University of Montana jersey. They don’t use phones up here; most of the digital team weren’t even issued any. Instead, campaign workers communicate mostly by e-mail, G-chat and Twitter. Rows of young staffers, some perched on yoga balls, are quietly coding new online tools to engage supporters, tweaking a video of Sarah Palin attacking Obama, and tracking metrics of volunteers recruited and new voters registered. An energetic hum fills the room, punctuated only by mouse clicks. Read the rest of this entry →

Progressives have been working to expose the American Legislative Exchange Council’s work for years, but, as we reported last week, the campaign against ALEC significantly escalated in recent weeks.
ALEC came under intense scrutiny over the past few weeks after progressive groups like Color of Change began pressuring corporations that fund ALEC to drop their support. The Center for American Progress also released a report highlighting the right-wing group’s role in pushing voter suppression efforts around the country. As a result, 10 companies, including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Kraft, have pulled out from ALEC.
In response to the exodus of corporate funding, ALEC made the decision today to scale back its operations and focus on “economic” matters. The group released the following statement:
We are eliminating the ALEC Public Safety and Elections task force that dealt with non-economic issues, and reinvesting these resources in the task forces that focus on the economy. The remaining budgetary and economic issues will be reassigned.

About BWFO
Black Women for Obama is a grass roots organization dedicated to the re-election of Barack Obama in 2012. In the 2008 election, we played a pivotal role, especially in the southeast, canvassing and volunteering, and we plan to do so nation-wide in the months leading up to the 2012 election as well.
Joining the organization is free - click here for more information, or call us at 404.692.5251.
We are the voice of black women around the nation, who believe that America needs President Obama to stay right where he is.
